Generally, bacteriostatic antibiotics should not be given in combination with bactericidal ones. Amoxicillin, a bactericidal antibiotic, requires the bacteria to be multiplying. If a bacteriostatic antibiotic, which stops multiplication of the bacteria, is taken concomitantly with amoxicillin, its optimal bacterial killing effect will be subsided. However, in practice there are many exceptions.
The combination of tetracycline and amoxicillin may result in decreased bactericidal action of amoxicillin . Avoid this combination when a rapid bactericidal action is required.
There are no reported drug interactions between amoxicillin and most other antibiotics, including sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim) , nitrofurantoin (Macrobid).
