Finasteride common medical uses:
Finasteride (Propecia) is used to treat men with male pattern hair loss to increase hair growth on the scalp and to prevent further hair loss.

Male pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia) is a common condition in which men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp. This often results in a receding hair line or balding on the top of the head. These changes typically start to occur in some men in their 20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a long period of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

Duration of therapy: A minimum of 6 months of treatment may be necessary to determine whether an individual will respond to finasteride.

Finasteride dosage:
Take prescribed dose once daily without regard to meals.

  • Propecia: 1 mg daily.
  • Proscar: 5 mg daily.

You may need to take Propecia daily for three months or more before you see a benefit from taking Propecia. Propecia can only work over the long term if you continue taking it. If the drug has not worked for you in twelve months, further treatment is unlikely to be of benefit. If you stop taking Propecia, you will likely lose the hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping treatment. You should discuss this with your doctor.

Finasteride side effects:

Finasteride (Propecia) is generally well tolerated. Adverse effects, which usually have been mild, generally have not required discontinuation of therapy.

  • Cardiovascular: postural hypotension (9%); hypotension (1%).
  • CNS: decreased libido (10%); dizziness (7%); headache, somnolence (2%).
  • Hypersensitivity: pruritus, urticaria, swelling of lips and face, testicular pain (postmarketing).
  • Respiratory: rhinitis.
  • Genitourinary: erectile dysfunction (19%), abnormal ejaculation (7%), decreased volume of ejaculate (4%), abnormal sexual function (3%), breast tenderness or enlargement in men.
  • Metabolic: peripheral edema.

Finasteride precautions:

  • Children: Do not give Finasteride (Propecia) to children.
  • Diminished urinary flow: Patients with a large residual urinary volume or severely diminished urinary flow for obstructive uropathy may not be candidates for finasteride therapy.

Finasteride drug interactions

  • None well documented.

Test Interactions:

  • Decreased prostate-specific antigen levels.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Risk Factor: X
Because of the ability of type II 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors to inhibit conversion of testosterone to DHT in some tissues, finasteride may cause abnormalities of the external genitalia of a male foetuses when administered to a pregnant woman.

Women should not handle crushed or broken tablets of finasteride when they are or may potentially be pregnant because of the possibility of absorption of finasteride and the subsequent potential risk to a male foetuses.

Breast-Feeding:
Not indicated for use in women. It is not known whether finasteride is excreted in human milk.

Overdose:
In clinical studies, single doses of finasteride up to 400 mg and multiple doses of finasteride up to 80 mg/day for three months did not result in adverse reactions.
